Subcutaneous Insulin in Diabetic Ketoacidosis (SQuID): A Nursing-Led Protocol Implementation
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious condition that occurs when the body is unable to produce enough insulin to transport glucose into the cells for energy or when tissues are resistant to the insulin that is produced.1 Thus, glucose accumulates to high levels in the bloodstream.2 The body tissues respond to their lack of glucose by signaling for the body to generate glucose from alternate energy sources.2 The body begins breaking down fat, which leads to the production of acidic byproducts called ketones (beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate).
