Large-Scale Production of Wool-Derived Activated Carbon

Year: 2025
Type: preprint
Abstract: The scope of this study involves utilizing wool as an abundant precursor for producing large quantities of activated carbon, focusing on optimizing large-scale production methods and assessing its absorption efficacy in environmental remediation applications. Designing a specialized furnace allows for processing large quantities of raw materials, over 7 L of wool, and providing uniform material distribution and suitability for physical activation using water vapor flow. Among chemical and physical activation methods, the most effective is physical activation at 900°C for 3 h. The resulting activated carbon exhibits a specific surface area of 1807 m²/g, a pore volume of 1.002 cm³/g, and an average pore diameter of 2.2 nm. Absorption experiments demonstrate exceptional chromium removal efficiency, achieving 99% removal from a 400-ppm solution within 45 min Chemical composition tests reveal favorable properties such as high iodine value, low ash content, moderate density, and a high methylene blue value, indicating strong absorption capacity for organic compounds.
