Smart Urban Design: Green Economy, Sixth Generation Sustainable Cities, and Global Climate Challenges

Year: 2025
Type: preprint
Abstract: This study introduces a novel, globally scalable architecture for sixth-generation smart cities that combines digital twins, the Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI) in a synergistic way utilizing equity-centered design principles. Using an innovative mixed-methods approach, the study combines real-time IoT data with a meta-analysis of more than 100 urban examples, such as Medellín, Singapore, and Rotterdam. This study indicates that generative AI enhances the design of climate-resilient infrastructure and that neuromorphic computing may reduce energy consumption by 40%, as evidenced by Rotterdam's €230 million yearly investment in flood prevention. The study's critical analysis of urban equity disparities emphasizes how 85% of slums in the Global South are excluded from smart city initiatives, according to UN-Habitat (2024). To bridge these gaps, the methodology provides use of blockchain governance, which was based on Dubai's Paperless Strategy, and lowcost IoT deployments, such as those carried out in Kenyan slums at 10% of traditional costs. The results demonstrate efficiency gains of 25% to 40% in regions such as waste management and mobility, as demonstrated by Amsterdam's 85% recycling rate. Despite these developments, the analysis reveals ongoing socio-technical gaps. Statistics show measurable energy savings up to 40% with neuromorphic computing and 25-40% gains in waste reduction and mobility. Efficiency with IoT deployments in informal settlements. and UNESCO's AI ethics by emphasizing adaptability for resource-constrained scenarios.
