Abstract: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by persistent hyperglycemia, which can lead to serious complications. Objective: The objective of this study is to analyze the relevance of educational actions in preventing complications resulting from Diabetes Mellitus. Theoretical Framework: DM treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach, but patients' low adherence to treatment is still a challenge. In this context, health education is essential to improve adherence and prevent complications. Method: This is an integrative literature review, with searches in SciELO and the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and LILACS databases. 312 articles were analyzed, 10 of which were selected according to methodological quality criteria. Results and Discussion: There was consensus that disseminating knowledge improves adherence to treatment, reducing complications such as neuropathies, amputations and cardiovascular diseases. The discussion highlighted that active educational strategies, such as interactive lectures and multi-professional follow-up, are more effective. However, challenges such as the lack of trained professionals and structured programs make it difficult to implement educational actions on a large scale. Research Implications: The practical and theoretical implications of this research are discussed, providing insights into how the results can influence practices in the field of DM. Originality/Value: The research showed that health education is an indispensable tool for preventing DM complications. Investments in professional training and public policies are necessary to ensure the continuity of these actions, promoting a better quality of life for patients and reducing public health costs.
