Prevalence and Predictors of Spasticity in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury at a Multiple Chinese Hospital

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Background: Spasticity (SPS) is a prevalent comorbidity in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). Currently, there is a scarcity of pertinent data in China. This study shows the prevalence and SPS predictors in admitted SCI patients at a Chinese hospital and enhances the precision and personalization of SPS intervention and management. Methods: In this retrospective study, we analyze the medical records of admitted SCI patients from three hospital centers in China from January 2018 to December 2023. However, perform a logistic regression analysis to identify the predictive factors associated with SPS in a sample of 268 patients. Results: The prevalence of SPS was 41.0%. However, gender, mechanism of injury, Association Impairment Scale, neurological level, paralysis type, completeness of lesion, time since injury, pressure ulcer, neuropathic pain, lower extremity venous thrombosis, anemia, D-dimer, hydronephrosis, hyperproteinemia, urinary tract infection, and timing of rehabilitation were predictor factors of SPS. Conclusion: It is essential to devise focused preventive and management strategies aiming to show the predictor factors and reduce the occurrence of SPS in hospitalized SCI patients. By addressing these factors, it is anticipated that overall quality of life and the efficacy of rehabilitation will be enhanced.
