Green Logistics and Decarbonization at the Port of Santos: Advances, Challenges, and Perspectives

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Objective: The objective of this study is to analyze green logistics and decarbonization initiatives at the Port of Santos, identifying the main advances, challenges, and prospects. To this end, tried to present and describe the central sustainability policies, programs, and projects implemented by the Port Authority of Santos and other relevant stakeholders. Theoretical Framework: The central issue guiding this study lies in the need to understand how the Port of Santos is addressing the challenges of decarbonization and incorporating the principles of green logistics into its operations and development strategies. Green logistics, in this scenario, goes beyond reducing emissions. Method: The research proposed in this work adopts a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach, based on bibliographic and documentary analysis. The descriptive approach aims to record, classify, and interpret existing practices, extracting patterns, challenges, and opportunities. Data analysis was conducted using the content analysis technique, as proposed by Bardin (2011). Results and Discussion: The analysis demonstrated that the pursuit of more sustainable operations is a growing priority for the port and the companies operating within it, driven by environmental awareness, regulatory pressures, and the quest for greater efficiency and competitiveness. Research Implications: The potential benefits of adopting these practices are multifaceted, including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and local pollutants, the optimization of operating costs, the improvement of institutional image, and the strengthening of supply chain resilience. Decarbonization is not only an environmental requirement, but also a strategic opportunity for the Port of Santos to position itself as a leader in sustainability on the global stage. Originality/Value: This study, it is recommended that public policymakers expand incentives to adopt clean technologies and environmental management standards, especially for small and medium-sized companies. Likewise, it is necessary to foster partnerships between academia, the private sector, and the government to strengthen the culture of logistics sustainability.
