Abstract: Background: With the evolution of 5G, 6G, and mmWave systems, modern wireless transceivers demand oscillators with high frequency stability and minimal interference. Voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) are critical in this context, but their performance is limited by phase noise, which directly affects bit error rate, channel interference, and signal clarity. Objective: This review aims to analyze recent advancements in ultra-low phase noise VCO design, focusing on circuit techniques, semiconductor technologies, and oscillator topologies suitable for high-speed wireless communication systems. Methods: A systematic evaluation of VCO architectures (LC-tank, ring, Colpitts, Hartley), semiconductor platforms (CMOS, SiGe, GaN, GaAs), and phase-noise reduction strategies (resonator optimization, injection locking, digital calibration) is presented. Literature spanning 2000–2024 is examined to compare performance trade-offs in tuning range, power efficiency, and integration complexity. Results: LC-tank VCOs offer superior phase noise performance, while SiGe and GaN technologies outperform CMOS at high frequencies. Techniques such as Q-factor enhancement, injection locking, and digital calibration achieve phase noise below –115 dBc/Hz.Conclusion: Ultra-low phase noise VCOs are vital for next-generation wireless, radar, and satellite systems. Future progress will rely on advanced materials, adaptive calibration, and 3D integration to meet sub-THz requirements.
