Abstract: This is an accepted article with a DOI pre-assigned that is not yet published.TheAmathus Beach Hotel was the firstproject for The Architects Collaborative in Cyprus, materialized incollaboration with a local Greek-Cypriot architectural firm, Colakides &Associates. Completed in 1973, the projectemerged at a time when the newly independent Republic of Cyprus was pursuing modernizationand nation-building, putting an emphasis on the advancement of the tourismindustry. Since the mid-1960s, the southeastern coast of Cyprus had seen phenomenaldevelopment, but the southwestern coast of the island seemed to lag behind. Thecity of Limassol saw the Amathus Beach Hotel as a vehicle for catching up, withthe hotel’s implementation not only putting Limassol on the internationaltourism map but initiating new negotiations between landscape and history that embodiedemerging socio-political discourse on issues of tradition and locality inCyprus. As this paper will show, landscape figurations of the hotel site weretied to the modernist rethinking of regionalist trajectories in the 1970s that shapedchanges in global modernism and established new alignments of corporate capitaland shifting tourism trends.
