Type: article
Abstract: Objective: To analyze the social vulnerability of family milk production units in El Marqués and Colón municipalities in the peri-urban region of the city of Querétaro. Methodology: Six social indicators were measured to build a social vulnerability composite indicator. A survey was applied to 52 family units. Results: The family units’ social vulnerability has medium level with a calculated value of 44.3%. Data show that security did not significantly affect producers despite the changing nature of territory; on the opposite, land tenure, organization and urbanization are factors that place the family units at a greater risk. Value: This research is different to previous studies on social vulnerability because it quantifies vulnerability with measurable indicators. Limitations: The survey did not include out of business family units. Conclusions: The social vulnerability composite indicator allowed to know that family units have developed adaptation strategies that reduce internal and external risks to continue carrying out their productive activities.
