The Role of Cognitive Biases in Shaping Investment Decisions: Implications for Financial Well Being
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Investor decision-making often deviates from rational expectations due to the influence of cognitive biases. This paper examines the impact of key behavioral biases-such as loss aversion, confirmation bias, and herd behavior-on investment strategies and long-term financial well-being.Drawing on behavioral finance theory and empirical evidence, the study highlights how these biases can lead to suboptimal portfolio choices, market inefficiencies, and heightened financial vulnerability among retail investors. The analysis further explores the growing relevance of behavioral factors in the era of digital finance, where social trading platforms and algorithmic nudges amplify decision outcomes. The paper concludes by discussing policy interventions, financial literacy initiatives, and behavioral design strategies that can mitigate the adverse effects of biases, thereby promoting healthier financial outcomes and improved investor welfare.
