Readiness for Digital Dentistry in Practice: A Cross-specialty Assessment of Awareness, Acceptance, and Barriers
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Background and aim: Digital dentistry offers multiple advantages, including precision, workflow, and patient-friendly treatment using CAD/ CAM, intraoral scanning, 3-D printing, and artificial intelligence (AI).The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the readiness of general dentists (GD) and specialists regarding digital dentistry and to determine what the most important factors are that affect their intention to use this technology.Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on a study population of 200 practicing dental professionals, including GD and specialists in orthodontics, prosthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, pediatric dentistry, endodontics, and periodontology.A structured, pre-validated questionnaire evaluated awareness, acceptability, and perceived challenges regarding digital tools.Statistical analysis was done using ANOVA, Chi-square, and multivariate regression analyses. Results: Prosthodontists and orthodontists reported the highest awareness (4.4 ± 0.5; 4.2 ± 0.6) and acceptance (4.3 ± 0.6; 4.1 ± 0.5) scores, while GD (2.9 ± 0.7; 3.2 ± 0.8) scored lower.Differences across specialties were statistically significant (ANOVA, p < 0.001).Cost and lack of training were the most commonly reported barriers, particularly among GD.Regression analysis identified specialty (β = 0.41, p < 0.001), prior training (β = 0.29, p = 0.004), and clinical experience (β = 0.17, p = 0.03) as significant predictors of digital acceptance (R 2 = 0.36, p < 0.001).Conclusion: Remarkable differences in the utilization of digital dentistry were seen among various specialties.Tailored training, curriculum modification, and facilities development are required to promote digital incorporation within all the domains of dentistry.Clinical significance: Disparities in digital readiness knowledge can inform educational and policy efforts to support equitable adoption and improve clinical outcomes.
