Abstract: The controllable line-commutated converter (CLCC) achieves forced commutation by using a hybrid connection of IGBTs and thyristors, effectively solving the inherent commutation failure (CF) problem of the line-commutated converter (LCC). By using auxiliary branch of CLCC to interrupt large current multiple times within a short period , the regulation range of the firing angle of CLCC can be broadened to allow CLCC to deliver short-term power support to AC systems. Firstly, the commutation characteristics of CLCC under different firing angles are analyzed, and its multi-quadrant power regulation capability is revealed. Secondly, in consideration of the operational status and transient withstand capability of CLCC, the permissible operating range of DC current and the adjustment range of firing angles are determined to establish a power operating region of CLCC. Finally, a reactive power support control strategy based on firing angle compensation is proposed to maximize the reactive power support of CLCC to the AC system. An electromagnetic transient simulation model of CLCC is established in PSCAD/EMTDC to verify its multi-quadrant power regulation capability and the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.
