Abstract: In 1973, the Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess divided the then nascent environmental movement into 'shallow' and 'deep, long-range' ecology.Naess' characterisation of the shallow movement ran to just eighteen words -'Fight against pollution and resource depletion.Central objective: the health and affluence of people in the developed countries' (Naess, 1973: 95) -while his exposition of deep, long-range ecology ran to several volumes.
