A Design Optimization Framework for Children's Table Lamps Integrating KANO-Kansei Engineering-AHP

Type: article
Abstract: With growing concerns over children's visual health, the human-centered and emotionally oriented design of children's table lamps has emerged as a prominent research focus. However, existing studies generally lack systematic methods for identifying and translating the multi-level needs of child users, particularly in effectively mapping emotional perceptions to specific design elements. To address these limitations, a multi-stage integrated design optimization framework combining the KANO model, Kansei Engineering, and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was hereby proposed and validated, aiming to systematically identify the key user needs in children's table lamp design and prioritize them quantitatively.Drawing on 480 valid KANO questionnaires and 470 Kansei evaluation surveys collected from cities such as Beijing, Nanjing, and Guangzhou, the KANO model was initially employed to classify user needs into basic, performance, and excitement categories, while excluding indifferent attributes.Subsequently, Kansei engineering was used to establish associations between six core affective vocabularies and eight representative product samples. Finally, AHP was employed to analyze the weights of six core design elements, identifying S2 (adjustable lighting) and S1 (adjustable structural size) as top design priorities, with weights of 0.43 and 0.23, respectively. The results demonstrate that the integrated framework proposed herein not only strengthens the systematic derivation of user needs and the precision of emotional response mapping but also furnishes a datasupported, practical trajectory for children's product design. The proposed "three-stage optimization model" (needs identification-affective translation-priority weighting) shows substantial potential for broader implementation in children's lighting and other family-oriented, user-driven design contexts.
