Abstract: this article aims to present a timeline of the relations between Brazil and France from the late 17th century to 2024, highlighting the cultural and, above all, military formation of our country. It also seeks to address the relevance of knowing the French language from that time to the present day. For this purpose, the text goes through the last four centuries of Brazilian history highlighting moments when France, directly or indirectly, contributed to the cultural and military formation of Brazil. Finally, the place occupied by the French language in the Brazilian Army Language Centre (CIdEx – acronym used in Portuguese) is presented.
