Investigation into the Environmental and Social Impacts of Semi-Mechanized Gold Mining at Amzegar Site, Rural Commune of Tabelot, Agadez Region, Niger

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study aims to assess the environmental and social impacts of semi-mechanized gold mining at the Amzegar site, with a view to contributing to the mitigation of risks associated with these activities. The methodological approach is based on field visits, surveys and interviews with site workers. The results show that pit mining, step mining and shaft mining are the three techniques used for ore extraction. The Fecteau grid-based assessment of the impacts associated with these extraction methods through the impact evaluation parameters (nature, intensity, extent and duration) shows a positive impact on the local and national economy, albeit with negative impacts that are early minor, moderate or major for biophysical (soil, air, water resources, vegetation and wildlife) and human (health and safety, noise and the local economy) components, depending on the different phases of the activity (preparation and installation, operation and closure). The implementation of an environmental management plan will help mitigate the risks associated with these activities (ecosystem degradation, water contamination, soil erosion and air pollution) and social risks (tailings management, land reclamation, use of cleaner technologies and environmental monitoring), as well as recommendations to protect the environment.
