In-Band Full-Duplex for Integrated Sensing and Communication: A Review and Perspective on Advances in Electromagnetics, Antennas, and Propagation

Abstract: The capability to simultaneously transmit and receive signals in the same frequency band, known as in-band full-duplex or simultaneous transmit and receive, increases the spectral efficiency and decreases the latency of communication systems. Moreover, sensing systems can also benefit from this capability. However, the primary challenge for successful implementation remains the susceptibility to self-interference. This article reviews various approaches to overcome the challenges presented by self-interference, focusing primarily on those that can be addressed by taking advantage of knowledge and understanding of electromagnetics, antennas, and propagation.
