Word-formation Strategies in Albanian Scientific Terminology for Flora and Fauna: a Corpus-based Morphological Analysis, Albanian Case

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the morphological strategies employed in the formation of Albanian scientific terminology related to flora and fauna, emphasizing the intersection of linguistic creativity, ecological knowledge, and cultural heritage.Drawing upon a corpus of approximately 1,500 entries from Xhevat Lloshi's bilingual dictionary (Shqip-Latinisht / Latinisht-Shqip), the research applies a corpus-based methodology to classify and analyze derivational, compounding, syntagmatic, and euphemistic structures. The findings reveal a high productivity in suffixation (e.g.,tar, -or, -shëm) and native compounding mechanisms, which facilitate precise and semantically transparent term creation while preserving cultural relevance. The study also examines dialectal variants and metaphorical expressions that enrich the lexicon with symbolic and regional nuances.Furthermore, it explores how linguistic contact-primarily with Latin and other historical influences-has shaped hybrid formations and calques without undermining the integrity of the Albanian morphological system.Ultimately, the research underscores the potential of minoritized languages like Albanian to contribute actively to global biodiversity discourse by harmonizing endogenous linguistic resources with international scientific standards. The study advocates for a culturally grounded and linguistically sustainable approach to scientific terminology development.
