Interface coating via mechano-fusion for improved SiOx anode performance in all-solid-state battery

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) have attracted significant attention due to their enhanced safety and potential for high energy density compared to conventional batteries with liquid electrolytes. Silicon-based anodes, particularly silicon oxide (SiOx), are promising candidates for next-generation anode materials due to their reduced volume expansion during lithiation and better capacity retention than pure silicon. However, achieving optimal electrochemical performance in ASSBs requires effective interface contact between the active material and the solid electrolyte, a challenge often exacerbated by void formation in conventional mixing methods. To address this, we propose the mechano-fusion (MF) process, where SiOx is coated with a ductile sulfide-based solid electrolyte, such as Li6PS5Cl. This approach facilitates smooth interface contact, reduces voids, and improves ion transport within the electrode. The enhanced interfacial contact achieved through the MF process leads to better mechanical stability and uniform particle distribution, which in turn improves capacity retention and rate performance. By reducing void formation and optimizing the interface between the active material and solid electrolyte, this innovative method shows great potential for the development of high-performance ASSBs, offering improved long-term electrochemical stability.
