A Lightweight, Flexible and Mechanically Robust Nonwoven Copper Metallized Nylon‐6 Fibers for Enhanced Charge Dissipation and Reduced Electrical Resistance for ESD Protection

Type: article
Abstract: Electrostatic discharges pose significant risks in electronics, aerospace and healthcare sectors, where uncontrolled static charges can damage devices or cause hazardous events. Advanced protective textiles must balance electrostatic protection with mechanical strength and breathability. Here Nylon‐6 (PA6) fibers coated with Cu using physical vapor deposition to suppress static charge buildup while maintaining structural integrity is presented. Using a combination of structural, chemical and mechanical analyses, it is shown that Cu‐coated fibers reduce triboelectric activity, improve mechanical performance, and retain breathability and moisture permeability suitable for wearable applications. Surface analysis revealed the presence of copper oxide, which forms during the coating process and contributes to the observed properties. These findings demonstrate that metalized fibers offer a promising strategy for next‐generation protective textiles, combining durability, comfort and effective electrostatic discharge control for use in sensitive environments.
