Hidden screen 3D display

Abstract: SUMMARY Three-dimensional (3D) displays can provide lifelike stereoscopic images. Compared to two-dimensional (2D) displays, image authenticity is a key characteristic. In traditional 3D displays, the display device is simultaneously visible alongside the 3D image. Consequently, it may appear that the 3D image is generated by the display device rather than existing independently in 3D space. Ultimately, the decline in 3D image authenticity significantly restricts the intrinsic value of 3D image content. To address this issue, a hidden screen 3D display is proposed. The proposed 3D display consists of a 2D display panel, a lenticular lens, a linear polarizer, a waveplate, a transflective mirror, and an analyzer. It employs the principle of polarization to hide the screen and utilizes the transflective mirror along with polarization phase modulation to create independent imaging of the 3D image, thereby achieving a hidden screen 3D display effect. Ultimately, the 3D image that cannot be visually traced exhibits superior authenticity. When further integrated with the surrounding real scene through the transparent display, it can achieve a naked-eye stereoscopic augmented reality experience. An experimental prototype was developed to verify the principle, with results showing a high consistency with the theoretical predictions.
