Threads of Resilience: Unravelling the Challenges of Foreign Students Pursuing Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Benguet State University

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: As universities worldwide become increasingly diverse, understanding the unique experiences of international students is essential in fostering inclusive and supportive higher education systems. In the context of the Philippines, a rising choice for international students, this study explores the experiences of foreign students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree at Benguet State University (BSU). Despite the institution’s efforts toward internationalization, limited research has focused on the academic and social adaptation of foreign students in demanding professional programs like nursing. This study addresses that gap by examining the challenges, coping strategies, and recommendations of international nursing students at BSU. Guided by Acculturation Theory and using a qualitative approach, the research employed Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to deeply explore the lived experiences of two foreign BSN students enrolled during the academic year 2024–2025. Through semi-structured interviews, participants revealed multifaceted challenges, including environmental adjustments, language barriers, cultural differences, academic pressures, and religious constraints. Despite these obstacles, the students demonstrated resilience by building social networks, enhancing language skills, and applying personal coping strategies. Participants also recommended improved academic support services, stronger cultural integration activities, and enhanced institutional programs to ease future international students’ transitions and promote a genuinely inclusive learning environment.
