To Assess the Vital Signs of Patients before and after Implant Surgery

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Aims and background: Patients' satisfaction with dental implant prostheses might be impacted by the fact that a surgical procedure is involved. Therefore, it becomes crucial on the dentist's part to provide patients with adequate, pertinent information before the surgery to reduce their anxiety and improve their capacity to handle the experience of recovery. This study aimed to assess vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature of patients before and after implant surgery.Materials and methods: Before and after implant surgery, vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature were assessed in consented patients who had single-unit dental implants placed between January 2024 and January 2025.Blood pressure was assessed using a digital blood pressure monitor, and body temperature was assessed using a digital thermometer. The surgical procedure followed the standard protocol of implant placement, and data related to the assessment of vital signs before and after implant surgery were collected for every patient.Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (p ≤ 0.05).Results: Body temperature before implant placement was 98.06 ± 0.42°F, while after implant placement, it was 98.07 ± 0.38°F (p = 0.881).The heart rate increased before implant placement (84.95 ± 6.48 beats/min) and was restored after implant placement (81.85 ± 6.00 beats/min) (p < 0.001).The mean arterial pressure before implant placement (systolic blood pressure) was 129.35 ± 9.43 mm Hg, while in the postoperative phase, it was 121.90 ± 8.47 mm Hg (p < 0.001), and (diastolic blood pressure) was preoperatively 84.68 ± 4.00 mm Hg and postoperatively 81.03 ± 3.49 mm Hg (p < 0.001).Conclusion: The main changes were seen from the preoperative to the postoperative phase in terms of heart rate, mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The study found a significant change or decrease in pulse rate, systolic, and diastolic blood pressure of subjects after implant surgery as compared to before implant surgery. However, body temperature remained similar before and after implant surgery.Clinical significance: Regularly assessing the vital signs before and after implant surgery not only ensures the immediate safety of the patient but also contributes to long-term recovery and minimizes the risk of postoperative complications. This practice is essential in enhancing patient outcomes and supporting the surgical team's ability to respond swiftly and effectively to any dental concerns.
