Abstract: The study examines the transformation in the manner by which the authority and role of Prague bishops were presented during the 13th century. The work focuses on the rituals (typically adventus episcopi), symbology and institutional memory that reinforced the identity of the bishop as both an individual and an institution within his episcopacy. The author employs an analysis of narrative and normative sources to elucidate the interrelationships between the liturgical role of the bishop, symbolic negotiation, and the real presence of the bishop in his own diocese. The representation of the bishops of Prague in the context of the so-called medieval transformation is viewed as a complex phenomenon involving the various levels of the bishop’s personality and their position of power in the spiritual and temporal spheres.
