Abstract: Oral mucositis (OM) is a frequent complication of cancer therapy, severely affecting patient quality of life (QoL). Photobiomodulation (PBM), a non-invasive red and near-infrared light therapy, has shown promise in preventing and treating OM. This review explores PBM’s mechanisms, efficacy, and clinical implications. By promoting tissue regeneration, reducing inflammation, and alleviating pain, PBM helps mitigate OM severity and duration. Studies suggest PBM does not negatively impact cancer treatment outcomes, making it a safe adjunctive therapy. Both intraoral and extraoral applications are discussed, along with considerations for dosage, adherence, and cost. While PBM appears effective in reducing OM, further research is needed to refine protocols and assess its effects on tumor cells. Overall, PBM represents a valuable supportive care tool, improving treatment compliance and patient outcomes.
