Conservation and Rural Community Development: The State of Agroforestry and Wildlife Conservation in Nigeria
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Nigeria, a nation of immense biodiversity and a large rural population, stands at a critical juncture where the imperatives of wildlife conservation and the socio-economic well-being of its communities are deeply intertwined. This article explores the complex and evolving relationship between conservation efforts and rural community development in Nigeria, with a specific focus on the roles of agroforestry and wildlife conservation. It argues that while significant challenges persist, integrated approaches that place local communities at the heart of conservation initiatives offer the most promising pathway towards sustainable livelihoods and the long-term protection of Nigeria's natural heritage.Through an examination of the current state of agroforestry practices, community-based wildlife conservation projects, and the prevailing policy landscape, this paper highlights both the successes and failures of existing models. It posits that empowering rural communities through land tenure security, benefit-sharing mechanisms, and the integration of indigenous knowledge with scientific expertise is fundamental to achieving a synergistic relationship between conservation and development.
