Where the Private Sector Lags: Government and NGO Roles in Advancing Rural STEM Equity

Year: 2025

Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Background Low participation and performance in STEM disciplines in secondary schools jeopardizes quality education, a key UN Sustainable Development Goal. STEM vocations, which are expanding faster than non-STEM jobs, provide self-employment and job development opportunities in all regions. However, rural students, particularly females, confront significant impediments, which are frequently the result of limited opportunities compared to urban city students. Methods This study compared the performance of rural schools against urban city schools to assess the gap rural areas schools were facing. This study thus, focused on bringing out awareness to educational stakeholders about the participation and performance of rural students in STEM fields particularly girls and proposed intervention to address the challenge. Results The study brought to light notable differences in educational performance between rural and urban locations, raising concerns that students in rural areas, and particularly girls, were less likely to advance in STEM fields academically in this region. Conclusion The study proposed that special attention would be required from the government in collaboration with NGO to intervene rural community STEM studies, through measures such as subsidized fees, raising awareness or similar, all that could improve student participation and performance in STEM subjects. This approach could help reduce the acute gender disparity observed in Tanzanian rural areas and improve the overall success of rural students in STEM studies.
