Abstract: Aim of the BookEnglish as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers often face the challenge of balancing comprehension or information retrieval with aesthetically focused reading, as well as constructing pedagogically and theoretically sound instructional approaches for their literary reading classes.Focusing on comics, specifically cartoons, as a major genre of visual literature, Oppolzer's book Reading Autobiographical Comics: A Framework for Educational Settings addresses these needs by updating Reader Response Criticism (RRC) principles into a practical framework for classroom use.In five chapters, Oppolzer develops a comprehensive argument for the theoretical principles underlying literary reading, in general, and comics, in particular, by aligning RRC principles with those of cognitive theories in comic research. This is further illustrated through case studies demonstrating how these principles can be pedagogically applied in EFL classroom contexts.
