Understanding the roles of equine veterinary nursing teams in UK practices

Year: 2025
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: wound dressing and Vetwrap (with no padding layer). When asked how they would manage a nail penetrating the hoof sole, 23.4% (22/94) would not call a veterinarian, however, 68.2% (15/22) would call a farrier for advice instead.Of those calling a veterinarian, 91.7% (66/72) said they would not remove the nail while waiting, however, 36.1% (26/72) would walk the horse with the nail in place from the field to a stable before the veterinarian's arrival. When presented with a puncture wound over a synovial joint, participants were concerned about the depth (79.7%; 59/74) and location (55.4%; 41/74) of the wound, however, 22.9% (17/74) would not call a veterinarian. Main limitations: Self-selection bias and social desirability bias. Conclusions: There were significant variations in equine wound management practices and safety concerns highlighted. The next phase of the study will evaluate the impact of new educational resources on these issues.
