Abstract: The paper analyzes travel as a central theme in the works of Eça de Queirós, within a context shaped by the advancement of transportation in the 19th century and the author’s experiences as a consul, particularly in relation to his diplomatic activities. The theme of travel, as a realist and biographical element, is a recurring motif in Queirosian narratives, symbolizing the pursuit of knowledge, self-discovery, and critical-philosophical relativism. It is observed that in the author’s early works, geographical displacement appears as an occasional element, whereas in his semi-posthumous and posthumous narratives, it assumes a central role, serving as a tool for philosophical reflection, with particular emphasis on the concept of philosophical travel. The paper aims to highlight these aspects, reflecting on the responses provided by traveling characters to existential and social dilemmas.
