Uma leitura de Alves e Cia e seu lugar na biblioteca queirosiana

Abstract: In this paper, we will discuss the place that the novella Alves & Cia occupies in Eça de Queiros’ works, highlighting its relevance on the author’s body of work. Although published posthumously, lending the novella an ambiguous position in the author’s oeuvre, the work’s briefness hides its expressiveness. Compared to other Queirosian works, either fictional or journalistic, on which critics have already ostensibly focused upon, Alves & Cia stands out for its freshness and comic vein. In 2021, Irene Fialho, responsible for the text's critical edition, in an article published in the Convergência Lusíada journal, set a date for the novel's conclusion that had hitherto been uncertain: 1884. This date provides us with a better understanding of the novel's connections with Queiros's work as a whole.
