Design and implementation of a secure IoT dashboard for cold room management using penetration testing methods
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The rise of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has transformed environmental monitoring systems, yet many implementations overlook critical cybersecurity vulnerabilities. This paper presents the design and implementation of a secure real-time dashboard for cold room management, built on an ESP32 microcontroller and Flask-based web server. The system collects temperature, humidity, and presence data via digital sensors, and transmits it wirelessly for visualization through a responsive web interface. Unlike traditional approaches, this work integrates penetration testing techniques directly into the development lifecycle, simulating real-world attacks such as Denial of Service (DoS), SQL injection, Man-in-the-Middle (MitM), and Wi-Fi de-authentication. Each simulated attack is followed by the deployment of specific countermeasures, including HTTPS encryption, rate limiting, input validation, and secure coding practices. The result is a functional and resilient system that not only ensures operational reliability but also provides a practical framework for securing IoT deployments in resource-constrained environments. This work highlights the importance of embedding cybersecurity by design in IoT architectures and offers a low-cost, extensible solution for critical infrastructure monitoring.
