Seeds of Plants as Natural Contraceptives

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Medicinal plants have been used for centuries as natural remedies for various health conditions, including fertility regulation.Recently, there has been growing interest in identifying plant-based alternatives to synthetic contraceptives. This study investigates the infertility-inducing properties of seeds from some medicinal plants like sesban, malai vembu, goonj, nirmali, cumin, neem, and long pepper, aiming to evaluate their potential as natural contraceptives.Various ethnobotanical records indicate that certain plant seeds have been traditionally used to regulate fertility, yet scientific validation remains limited. The findings reveal that specific bioactive compounds present in the seeds exhibit antifertility effects through hormonal modulation or interference with gamete function.Understanding the underlying mechanisms can contribute to developing novel plant-based contraceptives, offering a sustainable and culturally acceptable option for family planning.
