The revised athlete sleep behavior questionnaire (ASBQ-2): Aligning with the latest in sleep science research
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article introduces the revised Athlete Sleep Behavior Questionnaire (ASBQ-2), refining the original ASBQ to better assess athlete sleep behaviors. Updates were based on expert consensus and new research evidence, and address factors like late naps, caffeine use, nighttime training, sleep medication, and electronic device use. Contextual factors, including travel, household disruptions, and large pre-bed meals, were incorporated. The ASBQ-2 maintains its original scoring while merging or removing minimally impactful items, resulting in an 18-item practical assessment tool. These enhancements improve the questionnaire's ability to identify maladaptive sleep behaviors, supporting targeted interventions to optimize recovery, performance, and well-being in athletes, a group prone to sleep challenges.
