Effect of powdered turmeric (Curcuma longa Linn.) supplement on male reproductive parameters in Wistar rats

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The quest for the medicinal benefits of turmeric powder has motivated researchers to investigate its health benefits, particularly in the area of reproduction. This study assessed the effects of powdered turmeric supplement (PTS) on male reproductive parameters in Wistar rats. Forty male rats were randomly assigned to four groups (A-D) and treated daily for 60 days via oral gavage as follows: Group A (control) received 1ml of distilled water, Group B received 250 mg/kg PTS, Group C received 500 mg/kg PTS, and Group D received 1000 mg/kg PTS. On days 30 and 60, blood samples and caudal epididymis were collected from five rats in each group for testosterone and sperm quality analysis, respectively. The results showed no significant differences (P>0.05) in sperm count, morphology, motility, and viability between treated rats and controls. However, Group D (1000 mg/kg PTS) showed a significant decrease in testosterone levels on day 30 compared to controls (p<0.05), but this effect was not statistically significant on day 60. These findings suggest that high doses of PTS (1000 mg/kg) may have adverse effects on male fertility, although the effects may diminish with prolonged exposure. Therefore, caution is advised when using high doses of turmeric supplements, particularly for men. Key words: Powdered turmeric supplement, Wistar rats, male reproductive parameters.
