Novel benzylidine derivatives for steel corrosion prevention in the oil industry

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Novel Bisbenzylidenecycloheptanone heterocyclic derivatives were produced and described utilizing spectra analysis (FT-IR, 1HNMR, 13C NMR) and elemental analysis. Prepared compounds were applied as efficient corrosion inhibitors (CIs) for SABIC steel used in the construction of fuel tanks and pipes artificial marine environment. Chemical, analytical, and electroanalytical, electrochemical methods were employed to assess CIs effectiveness of synthesis materials. The effects of inhibitor concentration and reaction temperature were examined, showing that inhibition efficiency improved with increasing concentration but decreased as the temperature rose. The maximum inhibition efficiency of 91.5% was obtained using 250 ppm of the studied compound number 3 (BBCH-3) at 303 K. The inhibition mechanism, attributed to the binding and adsorption of inhibitor molecules on the steel surface, aligns with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) was utilized to estimate the dissolved iron content resulting from the corrosion process in the corrosive medium, demonstrating a reduction in iron dissolution with the introduction of the prepared heterocyclic inhibitor compounds. Potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) data indicated the mixed-type nature of the prepared inhibitors, with the prepared inhibitors enhancing polarization resistance and inhibition performance through adsorption at the metal/electrolyte interface.
