Reimagining food fortification through a consumer-centred approach

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Food fortification is a critical tool for addressing global micronutrient deficiencies, yet existing frameworks often prioritize industry standards and policy enforcement over consumer engagement. Despite numerous fortification initiatives, public awareness, transparency, and accessibility remain inconsistent, leading to gaps in effectiveness and trust. This study builds on examining existing fortification frameworks, highlighting their strengths and limitations. While current models effectively determine fortification needs, feasibility, and industry compliance, they frequently overlook harmonization with existing health interventions, policy integration, and consumer inclusion. This presentation explores how fortification can be reframed through a consumer-centred approach, ensuring that individuals are informed, empowered, and actively engaged in food fortification policies and practices. Key challenges, such as limited public awareness, labelling inconsistencies, and lack of consumer consultation, are analysed alongside solutions that emphasize transparency, education, and policy integration. By bridging the gap between fortification efforts and consumer needs, governments and industry stakeholders can enhance public trust, compliance, and long-term health outcomes. Informed by existing gaps in fortification policy, this study argues for a revised model that strengthens enforcement while fostering consumer participation, ultimately creating a more sustainable and equitable food fortification system.
