A meta-analysis of the effects of post-activation potentiation on sprint ability in male ball players
Year: 2025
Type: review
Study designs: Systematic Review, Meta-Analysis
Abstract: Objectives To perform a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of post-activation potentiation interventions on the short-distance sprinting ability of male ball players. Methods Randomized controlled experimental literature on post-activation potentiation intervention for sprint ability was obtained from the PubMed, EBSCO, Web of Science, and CNKI databases. The literature search included publications from the inception of each database until December 1, 2023. NoteExpress software was used to manage and screen the literature. Review Manager 5.4 was utilized to evaluate the methodological quality of the included studies. Comprehensive meta-analysis software was used to generate forest plots and conduct analyses for heterogeneity, subgroup, and publication bias of the eight included studies. Results The meta-analysis showed that post-activation potentiation could improve the 10 m sprint ability of male ball players, although the effect was not statistically significant (standardized mean difference = −0.254, P = 0.171 > 0.1). Post-activation potentiation demonstrated a significant improvement in the 15 m and 20 m sprint abilities of male ball players (standardized mean difference = −0.962/−0.394, P = 0.01/0.022 < 0.1). Notably, interventions lasting 4–6 weeks, conducted two times per week, and with an intervention intensity of 60% RM or above had a better effect on improving 15 m and 20 m sprint abilities. Conclusion Post-activation potentiation significantly improves the sprinting ability of male ball players; however, training variables should be tailored to specific circumstances and individual factors.
