Abstract: This article explores the conflicting perspectives of Alexis de Tocqueville in his writings about Algeria. The latter reveal his complex and often contradictory stance on democracy and colonialism. On one hand, Tocqueville is known for his advocacy of democratic principles and individual liberties, while on the other, his support for French colonialism casts a di(erent light on his political thought. By examining his reports, essays, and letters on Algeria, the paper aims to contribute to the understanding of Tocqueville's intellectual legacy while highlighting the tensions between his liberal ideals and his advocacy for the colonial policies of 19th-century European imperial powers.
