Sustainable use of Natural Resources in the New Valley Governorate
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Due to the widening gap over time between the available and required economic resources-particularly water resources-there is an urgent and necessary need to study the planning and management of resource use in a way that maximizes returns and ensures sustainability, New Valley Governorate is facing a water crisis resulting from unplanned drilling and excessive groundwater extraction from deep wells, which has led to significant depletion and waste of water resources, This comes at a time when water demand is on the rise, necessitating a thorough review of the crop structure to address the water resource deficit, This study employed amulti-objective linear programming approach under the prevailing physical and economic constraints in New Valley Governorate during the period (2020–2022), Three alternative crop structure models were proposed using multi-objective linear programming, comprising around 36 cropping activities, including 14 winter crops, 13 summer crops, 5 Nile-season crops, and 4 medicinal and aromatic crops, The results of comparing the alternative crop structures indicate that the first scenario achieved the highest economic return compared to the current crop structure, reaching approximately EGP 3.8 billion-an increase of about EGP 686 million, representing an 18.75% rise over the current structure. The results also showed a reduction in water requirements under the proposed first scenario by approximately 848 million cubic meters, contributing to the conservation of the governorate’s non-renewable groundwater reserves.
