Abstract: The technique for anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) began in 1930 with Capener [1] and Burns [2]. Initially, this surgery was associated with high rates of complications due to the transperitoneal approach [3]. However, since 2002, the description of the retroperitoneal approach by Brau [4] revolutionized this procedure, significantly reducing complication rates and making it a safe option for lumbar arthrodesis currently [5].
