Heme-like structure of iron-based photocatalyst mediate oxalic acid for simultaneous remediation of Cr(VI) and As(III)

Abstract: The presence of carcinogenic heavy metals hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and trivalent arsenic (As(III)) poses significant threats to human health and environmental safety. In order to address this issue, an iron-based photocatalyst with a heme-like structure (HMS-Fe) was developed. HMS-Fe combined with oxalic acid (OA) demonstrated effective removal of both Cr(VI) and As(III) under light condition. It converts highly toxic Cr(VI) into low-toxicity Cr(III) and oxidizes As(III) to more treatable As(V). Moreover, HMS-Fe demonstrates the same long-lasting, effective performance as commercial catalysts over multiple cycles. Overall, the simultaneous remediation of Cr(VI) and As(III) via Heme-like structure of iron-based photocatalyst provides an effective treatment for heavy metals in wastewater.
