Multiple Compound Odontoma in a Pediatric Patient: A Unique Case Report

Year: 2025

Study design: Case Report
Abstract: Odontomas are odontogenic benign tumors composed of dental tissue. Complex odontomas present as irregular masses containing different types of dental tissues, whereas compound odontomas present superficial anatomic similarity to even rudimentary teeth-the denticles. Case description: In our case, we present a 9-year-old male patient who visited with a complaint of a retained upper primary incisor. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) reveals multiple tooth-like structures in the apical third of 51 and impacted 11. Extraction of around 50 odontomas was done under general anesthesia. Following the procedure, the healing was uneventful, and the patient is on regular follow-up for the management of impacted 11. Conclusion: The histopathological investigation reveals sections showing toothlet-like structures composed of follicular epithelium, enamel, and mineralized dentin, suggestive of compound odontoma. Clinical significance: Timely detection of odontomas and surgical enucleation is often advised to prevent over-retention, impaction, and delayed eruption of permanent teeth.
