Evaluating the Impact of ChatGPT-Assisted Writing: A Controlled Study on Undergraduate Academic Compositions

Abstract: The application of generative AI in education breaks through the traditional process of educational writing. At the same time, it is a great revolution in the field of education. In this change, the generative writing tool with ChatGPT as the main tool triggered great concern in the academic world. This study has proved through multiple experiments that: students' use of AI-assisted tools will greatly improve their writing efficiency. However, the problem that arises with it is that students' writing innovativeness decreases with the bandwagon of generative AI. This paper calls for a change in the field of AI in education by improving students' own learning ability, positive guidance from tutors, and regulation of AI in academic writing.
