Abstract: Attractiveness influences many dimensions of individual life, yet its meaning and role evolve with age. In later life, individuals often reinterpret what constitutes both physical and interpersonal attractiveness. This study aimed at qualitatively exploring how older adults conceptualize attractiveness and what are the aspects they associate with being attractive at their age. Through nine focus group interviews with participants aged 65 to 94, the authors found that older adults prioritize personal hygiene, micro-activities, and daily elegance in their definitions of attractiveness. Maintaining personal hygiene is regarded as a sign of self-respect and respect for others; micro-activities reflect vitality and having control over one’s body despite age-related changes; and daily elegance – encompassing one’s dress, demeanor, and style – contributes to a sense of self-worth and facilitates social connection. These findings suggest that for older adults attractiveness has important social and psychological functions, linking one’s identity and role within the social group.
