Expanding the knowledge of the genus Rhinibius Brennan and Yunker (Trombidiformes: Trombiculidae): redescription of Rhinibius tamandua Brennan and Yunker and description of a new species from Brazil
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The Neotropical genus Rhinibius Brennan and Yunker (Trombidiformes: Trombiculidae) was previously known from a single species, Rhinibius tamandua Brennan and Yunker, described from specimens collected in the nasal passages of the Southern tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla) in Brazil and Venezuela. This study provides a comprehensive review of the genus, including a redescription of the type species and the description of a new species associated with rodents in São Paulo, Brazil. Morphological comparisons reveal distinct differences between R. tamandua and the new species, Rhinibius narizinhoae sp. n., including a difference in the shape of the prodorsal sclerite, ventral setae on the palptibia, and the number of setae on coxal field III. This study enhances our understanding of the diversity of Rhinibius, providing new insights into its taxonomy, host associations, and South American distribution.http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:act:3C58AD59-F2DC-4ABC-BA32-A4D40C942C5F
