Abstract: In this article, we investigate cemeteries as urban territories, considering two perspectives: as territories and as elements of cultural expression. Cemetery studies, though rarely explored, hold significant potential for academic research. Our objective is to relate the social transformations of the second half of the 19th century to territorial changes in the city's public space through the narrative of the construction of cemeteries in Vitória. To achieve this, we present the results of an exploratory research carried out through the platform of the Brazilian National Digital Library, which provided access to the Brazilian Digital Newspaper Library. We used primary sources, documents, and materialities to investigate the trajectories and territorial significance of cemeteries, as well as the transformations in cemetery spaces. We observed that the trajectory of the cemeteries in Vitória reveals significant sociocultural and urbanistic changes that reflect the social and political dynamics of the time. We conclude that cemeteries are important indicators of urban and social transformations, contributing to the historical and cultural understanding of the city.
