Comprehensive Study on the Design and Optimization of Microgrid Systems Using Matlab and Simulink
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The motivation for designing and optimizing microgrids stems from the pressing need to modernize energy systems for improved sustainability, reliability, and resilience.Traditional centralized power grids face challenges such as transmission losses, dependency on fossil fuels, and vulnerability to disruptions, which can lead to costly and extensive blackouts.Microgrids offer a viable solution by localizing power generation, often through renewable sources like solar and wind, reducing the need for long-distance transmission and enhancing energy independence.Additionally, the optimization of microgrids is essential to maximize efficiency and minimize operational costs.Optimized microgrid systems can respond dynamically to fluctuating loads and renewable energy availability, improving grid stability and lowering emissions. For communities in remote or underserved areas, microgrids represent a lifeline, providing reliable electricity where conventional grid access is limited or economically unfeasible.Using MATLAB for microgrid design and optimization allows for the integration of advanced modelling and simulation tools, enabling precise control and analysis of complex systems. This project, therefore, aligns with global energy transition goals by exploring innovative approaches to decentralized energy management, which will be instrumental in supporting future smart cities, reducing carbon footprints, and promoting sustainable development worldwide.
