Process configurations for emission control: CESAR1 emission behavior in biomass combustion gas treatment
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the emission behavior of CESAR1 solvent in a pilot-scale carbon capture unit at a biomass-fired power plant, with focus on the effects of operational configurations on amine emissions. We demonstrate that wash column parameters, including water wash flow, wash column temperature, and acid wash pH, have a significant impact on emissions. The application of a solvent filter proved highly effective in limiting emissions by preventing the buildup and release of degradation byproducts. While activating the intercooler had a minimal direct effect on amine emissions under the conditions studied, it led to increased impurity concentrations in the CO 2 -rich stream. This may indicate a redistribution of volatile compounds within the process. Additionally, a change in flue gas concentration was linked to higher emission levels, particularly of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) and piperazine (PZ), underscoring flue gas content as a key factor driving solvent losses. These findings highlight the intricate nature of amine emissions and provide valuable insights into the crucial role of optimizing operational conditions in enhancing emission control and system performance. • Emissions measured at an amine-based capture pilot on biomass flue gas. • PTR-ToF-MS enabled real-time impurity analysis in gas and CO 2 stream. • Wash column flow, temperature, and acid concentration affected emissions. • IC start increased impurity levels in the CO 2 -rich stream. • Solvent filtration reduced amine emissions, proving an effective strategy.
