Abstract: Mathematical modeling is the process of analyzing real-life situations or realistic scenarios using mathematical methods. This study aims to examine the mathematical modeling competencies of 11th and 12th-grade students from a science high school and a project school, based on their responses to the "Deniz Stationery Sales" mathematical modeling activity. The research was designed using the case study method, a qualitative research approach. The study group consisted of 119 students from the 11th and 12th grades, attending a science high school and a project school in the Southeastern Anatolia Region. Data for the research were collected through the "Deniz Stationery Sales" activity, developed by the researchers. The data obtained from the study were analyzed using descriptive analysis. As a result of the study, it was found that students were most successful in the competency of understanding real-life problems, with science high school students performing better than project school students in this competency. It was also observed that the students' overall mathematical modeling competencies were at a low level, and the modeling competency levels were similar between the two schools. The study suggests that in order to improve students' mathematical modeling competencies, activities that include mathematical modeling should be incorporated into mathematics education.
